Vertical catfish fishing
Vertical catfish fishing
Vertical catfish fishing consists of prospecting the bottom with heavy lures (jigs, shads) from a boat stabilised over the spots. The fish finder is the essential tool: it allows locating catfish, measuring depth and positioning the lure centimetres from the fish. This very active and technical technique offers spectacular results on the deep waters of the Lot and Lot-Garonne confluence.
The holes of the Lot-Garonne confluence, some exceeding 8 metres, are prime spots for vertical fishing. Catfish gather there, especially in summer. From the private pontoon of Gîte du Martin Pêcheur, you're at the heart of this territory. Hamid knows the coordinates of the most productive holes where 2-metre-plus catfish hold. A boat and fish finder are the keys to success.
What you need
Fish finder (echo sounder)
Essential for locating catfish and structure. Model with GPS and mapping to memorise spots. High-definition display recommended.
Jigging rod 2.40 to 2.70 m
Fast action, 80-150 g casting. A short stiff rod for precise animation and effective striking from the boat.
Casting or spinning reel
6:1 or 7:1 ratio for fast retrieve. 150 m capacity of 40/100 braid. Smooth drag for large catfish runs.
Jigs and shads 40-80 g
Soft lures type shad 15-25 cm, or metal jigs. Dark colours (midnight blue, black) for the Lot's coloured waters.
Anchor or electric motor
To hold the boat over the spot. An electric motor with spot-lock facilitates holding position without drift.
Rigging and practice
Locate catfish on the fish finder
Navigate over holes and deep zones. Spot the characteristic arches of catfish on the screen. Note GPS coordinates of productive spots. On the Lot, holes downstream of the confluence and channel margins are priorities.
Position the boat
Anchor or use spot-lock to hold the boat over the catfish. The lure must be able to reach the bottom and rise vertically without excessive drift.
Lower and animate the lure
Let the lure descend to the bottom. Animate with rod movements: sharp pulls of 30-50 cm, pauses. The catfish often follows on the rise. Vary the rhythm if no take.
Strike and fight
The take is a sharp strike or blockage. Strike immediately and firmly. Keep the rod high to prevent the catfish diving under the boat. The fight is intense but manageable with good equipment.
Alternate spots
If a spot gives nothing after 15-20 minutes, move. Catfish can be grouped or dispersed depending on time and conditions. The fish finder guides you.

Gîte du Martin Pêcheur, on the banks of the Lot at Aiguillon, offers privileged access to the Lot-Garonne confluence. The private pontoon allows easy embarkation for vertical fishing sessions. Local holes hold 2-metre-plus catfish. Hamid, your host, can point you to the best spots and adapted techniques. A boat and fish finder are necessary; rentals exist nearby.
Book your stayCommon mistakes
Fishing without a fish finder
Without a fish finder, you're fishing blind. Investing in an echo sounder (even entry-level) multiplies your chances. It's the number one tool for vertical fishing.
Animating too fast
Catfish often prefer slow regular animation. Too jerky pulls can spook them. Try different rhythms.
Forgetting to change spot
Staying on an empty spot wastes time. If nothing after 15-20 minutes, move. Active prospecting is key.
Undersized equipment
A 2-metre catfish requires a rod and reel suited to the task. Equipment that's too light risks breakage and unnecessarily prolongs the fight.
Your questions about this technique
What fish finder for vertical catfish fishing?
A fish finder with GPS and mapping is ideal. Dual-frequency models (83/200 kHz) offer good definition. Lowrance, Garmin or Humminbird offer effective entry-level models.
What depth for vertical fishing on the Lot?
Holes of the Lot-Garonne confluence vary from 4 to 10 metres. Catfish often hold between 3 and 8 m from the bottom. The fish finder tells you exactly where to cast.
Do you need a motor boat?
A rowing boat or kayak can suffice for small zones. To prospect Lot holes effectively, a motor (petrol or electric) is recommended.
What lure size for vertical fishing?
15 to 25 cm shads and 40 to 80 g jigs work well. Large lures target large catfish. On the Lot, medium sizes (18-20 cm) are versatile.
Does vertical fishing work year-round?
Yes, but the best periods are spring and summer when catfish are active. In winter, slow the animation and prospect the deepest holes.
