The catfish: records broken every year

Since its expansion in France in the 1980s, silurus glanis has kept pushing the limits. This fish, still growing, has colonised major rivers, and records are regularly broken. In 2025, a 2.79-metre specimen was caught in the Tarn at Albi. This freshwater giant fascinates as much as it divides: some see it as a threatening super-predator, others as an exceptional sport fishing opportunity. One thing is certain: its growth potential has not yet revealed all its secrets.

European records

The world record in public waters is held by Alessandro Biancardi with a 2.85-metre specimen caught in the Po in Italy in 2023. The Ebro in Spain regularly produces specimens over 2.50 metres. The Danube and its tributaries remain the historic cradle of this species in Europe. France ranks 2nd in Europe for records, behind Italy. The Tarn and Garonne rival the best rivers on the continent.

French rivers with giant catfish

Six French rivers concentrate numerous big specimens:
  • 1Tarn: Undisputed no. 1, 2.79 m record, deep holes around Albi.
  • 2Garonne: The whole middle and lower course, regular 2.50 m+ specimens.
  • 3Rhône and Saône: High density between Lyon and Avignon.
  • 4Lot: Confluence with the Garonne at Aiguillon, 2 m+ specimens.
  • 5Seine: Growing population in Paris and downstream.
  • 6Loire: Recent colonisation, huge potential for the years to come.

The Lot–Garonne confluence at Aiguillon is a recognised hotspot for this predator. These deep holes (6–12 m) created by the meeting of the two watercourses concentrate several big specimens.

How big can the catfish grow?

Some biologists estimate that 3 metres represents the theoretical natural limit of the species. Beyond 2 metres, growth becomes very slow: a few centimetres and 5 kg per year. Life expectancy can reach 60 to 80 years in optimal conditions. A 2.85-metre specimen is probably over 40 years old. Warm waters, abundant food and absence of fishing pressure favour reaching these exceptional sizes. The potential in France may not yet be fully realised.

The catfish: super-predator or scapegoat?

This freshwater giant is the subject of controversy in France. Yet several INRAE studies show a varied diet: it does not feed solely on fish. Its real impact on certain local populations is debated. Science indicates that it does not decimate these ecosystems. Responsible catch-and-release practice preserves numerous big specimens while limiting harvests. It is above all a fascinating fish that deserves respect.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions on this topic.

What is the current catfish record in France?

The current record is a 2.79-metre catfish caught in the Tarn in 2025. The estimated weight is 130 to 150 kg.

What is the world record?

The world record in public waters is a 2.85-metre catfish caught in the Po in Italy by Alessandro Biancardi in 2023.

Can the catfish reach 3 metres?

Scientifically, it's possible but extremely rare. Growth slows significantly after 2 metres. A 3-metre catfish would probably be over 60 years old.

Is the catfish dangerous to humans?

No, no documented case of a catfish attacking a human. The catfish is not a human predator. However, handling it requires precautions (gloves, watch out for spines).

Can you fish for catfish all year round?

Yes, there is no specific close season for catfish. The best period remains March to October, with a peak in activity from June to September.
