Black bass lure fishing in France

The black bass (Micropterus salmoides), native to North America, has naturalised in many French waters and is a prime target for lure anglers. Aggressive, combative and wary, it demands a technical approach and knowledge of spots. In France, the Lot is one of the rare rivers where black bass is well established, offering anglers a unique opportunity to track it in an exceptional natural setting.

On the Lot at Aiguillon, black bass finds varied habitats: dense weed beds, wooded margins, calm zones sheltered from current, rocks and roots. It loves warm water (18-28°C) and structure that offers ambush spots. Lure fishing — crankbait, spinnerbait, soft lure, topwater — allows covering these environments and triggering spectacular attacks. Gîte du Martin Pêcheur is ideally located to prospect Lot black bass zones, with direct access to weed beds and suited margins.

Equipment needed

What you need

Casting or spinning rod 2.10 to 2.40 m (5-25 g)

Fast action for feeling and striking. Casting rod recommended for precision. M to MH power according to lure size.

Casting or spinning reel

150-200 casting reel for precise casting under branches, or 2500 spinning. 12-18 lb braid. 6:1 or higher ratio for fast retrieve.

Crankbait and spinnerbait lures

Diving crankbaits 5-8 cm, spinnerbaits 1/8 to 1/4 oz. Natural (perch, shad) and dark colours. For weed beds and margins.

Soft lures and Texas rig

Worms 6-8 cm, creatures, craws. Texas rig for cluttered zones. Green, violet, black, watermelon colours.

Surface lures (topwater)

Popper, frog, walker. For surface attacks in summer. Use at start and end of day on weed beds.

Step by step

Rigging and practice

1

Locate black bass spots

Dense weed beds, wooded margins with shade, roots and submerged branches, calm zones sheltered from current. On the Lot, weed beds opposite the lodge and margins with vegetation are prime spots. Black bass hunts from ambush: target structure.

2

Choose the lure according to environment

Weed beds: frog, Texas with worm, spinnerbait. Margins: crankbait, spinnerbait, jerkbait. Open water: diving crankbait, soft lure. Surface: popper, walker at start/end of day.

3

Animate with precision

Black bass reacts to varied animation. Crankbait: regular retrieve with pauses. Spinnerbait: slow retrieve with twitch. Soft lure: hop-hop, pauses. Topwater: sharp twitch, long pauses. Adapt to the day's mood.

4

Strike and fight

Black bass often attacks violently. Strike on the take. The fight can be sporty: keep tension, avoid obstacles. Fine-mesh landing net for careful release.

5

Respect times and season

Black bass is active in warm water (May to September). Best times: dawn (5-8am) and dusk (6-9pm). In midday, slow down and target shaded zones.

At the lodge

Practice this technique with us

Gîte du Martin Pêcheur offers privileged access to Lot black bass zones. Weed beds opposite the pontoon, wooded margins and calm zones nearby are prime spots. Hamid knows the spots where black bass hold according to season and water level. The pontoon allows casting at dawn towards the weed beds. A boat opens access to more distant zones. Black bass presence on the Lot is a rare asset in France: make the most of it during your stay.

Pitfalls to avoid

Common mistakes

Fishing too fast

Black bass can be wary. Slow down, make long pauses, vary animation. A lure that "drags" sometimes triggers more attacks than fast retrieve.

Neglecting weed beds

Weed beds are black bass's preferred spots. Use weedless setups (Texas, frog) to prospect in the heart of vegetation. That's where the big ones hide.

Forgetting topwater in summer

In summer, black bass rises to the surface. Poppers and frogs at start and end of day give spectacular attacks. Don't stay only on bottom lures.

Striking too early on topwater

On a popper or frog, wait to feel the fish's weight before striking. Striking on the splash often causes drop-off. Patience on surface takes.

FAQ

Your questions about this technique

What is the best period for black bass on the Lot?

Black bass is active from May to September, with a peak in June-July. Best times are dawn and dusk. In mid-summer, it can be capricious at midday.

What lures for black bass in France?

Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, soft lures (worms, creatures) on Texas rig, and topwater (popper, frog). On the Lot, alternate according to spots: weed beds = Texas/frog, margins = crankbait/spinnerbait.

Is black bass present everywhere on the Lot?

Black bass is present on the Lot between Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the confluence with the Garonne. Calm zones with weed beds and wooded margins are most suited. Hamid knows the most productive sectors.

Do you need specific equipment for black bass?

A casting or spinning M to MH rod (5-25 g), an adapted reel and a selection of lures (crankbait, spinnerbait, worms, topwater) suffice. The Texas rig is essential for weed beds.

Can you fish black bass catch-and-release at the lodge?

Yes, catch-and-release is strongly recommended. Black bass is a fragile species. Minimal handling, quick photo, immediate release. Mats and adapted landing nets are available at the lodge.
