Pike lure fishing
Pike lure fishing: complete guide
Pike lure fishing is one of the most dynamic and rewarding techniques for tracking Esox lucius. This iconic freshwater predator loves cluttered margins, dense weed beds and moderate current zones where it lies in wait for prey. On the Lot at Aiguillon, the pike finds ideal habitat: rocks, submerged trees, current junctions and weed beds offer as many ambush spots to prospect methodically.
The Lot, in its section between Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the confluence with the Garonne, presents a diversity of structures suited to pike. Wooded margins with roots and fallen branches, water lily fields in summer and holes near currents constitute privileged hunting zones. Lure fishing allows quickly covering these spots, adapting animation to conditions and triggering spectacular attacks. From Gîte du Martin Pêcheur, you have access to kilometres of banks and spots where fine pike are regularly caught.
What you need
Spinning rod 2.40 to 2.70 m (10-40 g)
Moderate to fast action for casting medium lures and feeling takes. Power suited to Lot pike (50 cm to 1 m).
Spinning reel 2500-3000
5.2:1 to 6.2:1 ratio, aluminium spool, progressive drag. 15-20 lb braid or 25/100 mono for versatility.
Steel or fluorocarbon hooklink
20-30 lb steel hooklink (20-40 cm) mandatory: pike cut mono. 40 lb fluorocarbon as alternative for more discretion.
Crankbait and spinnerbait lures
Diving crankbaits 8-12 cm (Rapala, Strike Pro), spinnerbaits 1/4 to 1/2 oz, wobblers 15-25 g. Natural and flashy colours according to clarity.
Long-nose pliers and gloves
For unhooking pike safely. Lot pike have formidable teeth; pliers avoid accidents.
Rigging and practice
Locate pike spots
Target cluttered margins (roots, branches), dense weed beds, hole entrances and moderate current zones. On the Lot at Aiguillon, natural rocks and trees fallen in the water are prime spots. Prospect preferably morning (6-10am) and late afternoon (5-9pm), peak activity periods.
Choose the lure according to conditions
Clear water: natural lures (perch, roach). Coloured water: bright colours (orange, chartreuse) or spinnerbait with coloured blade. Depth 1-3 m: diving crankbaits. Weed beds: spinnerbait or soft lure on Texas rig. On the Lot, alternate crankbait and spinnerbait according to structure.
Cast and animate the lure
Cast along margins, parallel to the bank. Crankbait animation: regular retrieve with short pauses. Spinnerbait: slow retrieve with light jerks. Wobbler: linear or slightly jerky retrieve. Touch obstacles regularly: pike attack on impact.
Strike and fight
Pike often attack on the chase: strike as soon as you feel the take or see the line tighten. Keep the rod low and line taut during the fight. Avoid sharp jerks: the pike's mouth is fragile. Guide the fish towards the landing net.
Handling and release
Use a fine-mesh landing net (no-kill). Grasp the pike by the gills or under the belly, never by the mouth without protection. Unhook with pliers, quick photo if desired, immediate release. Pike is fragile: handle as little as possible.
Practice this technique with us
Gîte du Martin Pêcheur offers direct access to the Lot and quality pike spots. Hamid, your host, knows the most productive spots: rocks downstream of the pontoon, weed beds opposite the lodge and wooded margins accessible on foot. The private pontoon allows casting from dawn without leaving the garden. Waders can be considered for prospecting the banks.
Book your stayCommon mistakes
Forgetting the steel hooklink
Pike cuts mono in an instant. A steel or 40 lb fluorocarbon hooklink is essential. Avoid disappointment by equipping systematically.
Retrieving too fast
Pike often prefer slow to moderate animation. Slow down, make pauses, let the lure "float" near obstacles. Patience pays.
Neglecting close margins
Large pike often hunt less than 2 m from the bank. Cast along the banks, under branches, in shaded zones. Don't prospect too far.
Striking too early
Pike can "take" the lure several times before swallowing. Wait for a firm pull or run before striking. Too hasty strike = missed fish.
Your questions about this technique
What is the best period for pike on the Lot?
Pike is active from March to November. The best periods on the Lot are spring (April-May) after spawning and autumn (September-November) when waters cool. In summer, prefer morning and evening.
Do you need a boat for pike lure fishing?
No. Bank fishing from the banks and pontoon of Gîte du Martin Pêcheur is very productive. A boat allows prospecting more spots but isn't essential. Hamid can point you to spots accessible on foot.
What lures to prefer on the Lot?
Diving crankbaits 8-12 cm (perch, roach imitation), spinnerbaits 1/4 to 1/2 oz, and wobblers 15-25 g. On the Lot at Aiguillon, natural colours and medium lures give the best results.
Is pike dangerous to handle?
Pike has sharp teeth and cutting opercula. Use long-nose pliers for unhooking and gloves if needed. Grasp by the gills or under the belly. Never fingers in the mouth.
Can you fish pike catch-and-release at the lodge?
Yes, catch-and-release is strongly recommended for predators. Careful release ensures the sustainability of Lot populations.
