The largemouth bass: American star of French waters

The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), or black-bass, was introduced to France in the 19th century. Since then, this percid has proliferated in the south of the country and offers sport fishing par excellence. Its exceptional fighting spirit, spectacular surface strikes and resistance during the fight make it a prime target for lure anglers. This predator favours temperate waters, wooded margins, weed beds and structure (pontoons, branches). In France, the south-west is its stronghold, with established populations in the Lot, Garonne and Landes ponds.

Where to find largemouth bass in France?

Five geographical zones concentrate the best populations of micropterus:
  • 1Lot-et-Garonne and Lot: Lot and Garonne rivers, established populations, temperate waters.
  • 2Landes and Gironde: Ponds and lakes, varied structure, good-sized specimens of this percid.
  • 3Hérault and Gard: Lac du Salagou and rivers, unique mineral setting.
  • 4Tarn-et-Garonne: Garonne and Tarn, confluence and holes.
  • 5Loire and tributaries: Populations expanding northwards.

South-west France is the cradle of this species. Lot-et-Garonne, with its temperate waters and varied structure, offers ideal conditions.

Largemouth bass fishing techniques

Four techniques dominate fishing for this predator:
  • 1Topwater: Surface at dusk, poppers and stickbaits, guaranteed visual thrills.
  • 2Texas rig: Weedless soft lure in obstacles, weed beds and branches.
  • 3Drop-shot: Finesse in deep zones, micro-actions.
  • 4Crankbait and spinnerbait: Fast prospecting of structure, zone coverage.

The bass angler's tackle

A M to MH casting outfit (2.40–2.70 m) suits the Texas rig and jig. An ML spinning outfit is ideal for finesse and drop-shot. Fine braid (12–15 lb) with 8–12 lb fluorocarbon leader is enough. No need for a wire trace: this predator has abrasive lips but no cutting teeth. Casting or spinning reels depending on the technique, with good retrieve for fast actions.

When to fish for largemouth bass?

The season runs from May to October, with a peak in activity from June to September. This species needs water above 15 °C to be active. A close season during spawning may apply depending on the département (generally March–April). In summer, dawn and dusk are the most productive slots, especially for surface fishing. On hot days, these fish retreat to the shade of structure.

Largemouth bass regulations in France

The legal size varies by département (generally 30 cm). Catch-and-release is encouraged to preserve populations. On the Lot in 2nd category, there is no specific close season for this percid. Always check with the local AAPPMA for current rules.

Largemouth bass at Gîte du Martin Pêcheur

A population of this predator is established in the Lot at Aiguillon. Swims with wooded margins and weed beds are ideal. Topwater at dusk from the private pontoon offers magical moments. This activity can be combined with carp and catfish in the same session. Hamid will point you to the best swims.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions on this topic.

What is the average size of largemouth bass in France?

The average size is 25 to 35 cm. Records exceed 50 cm. Specimens of 40 cm and more are considered fine fish.

What is the best lure for largemouth bass?

The Texas rig with a creature bait (soft lure such as craw or worm) is the most versatile technique. On the surface, the popper and stickbait are unbeatable at dusk.

Can you eat largemouth bass?

Yes, largemouth bass is edible. However, catch-and-release is recommended to preserve populations and big specimens.

What is the difference with perch?
