The best soft lures for zander

Zander is a predator particularly reactive to soft lures. Shads, worms, creatures and other soft plastics imitate natural prey (bleak, roach, crayfish) and trigger attacks through their fluid animation and presence on the bottom. The choice of lure, colour, size and setup directly influences the number of takes. On the Lot, where zander shares habitat with perch, an adapted selection allows effectively targeting both species.

The Lot at Aiguillon presents varied bottoms: gravel, sand, rocky zones and weed beds. Zander loves breaks, current margins and holes. Soft lures allow prospecting these structures with precision, working near the bottom (zander's preferred zone) and adapting animation to conditions. Natural colours dominate in clear water, while bright shades (chartreuse, orange) can revive activity in coloured water. From Gîte du Martin Pêcheur, accessible holes and rocks suit soft lure fishing perfectly.

Equipment needed

What you need

Spinning rod 2.40 to 2.70 m (5-25 g)

Moderate to fast action for casting 8 to 15 g lures and feeling takes. Important sensitivity for bottom work.

Spinning reel 2500-3000

12-18 lb braid or 20/100 mono. 18-25 lb fluorocarbon hooklink to avoid abrasion on rocks.

Shads 8 to 12 cm

Curly-tail shads (Keitech, Crazy Fish, Mann's) in 8-10 cm for zander. Colours: natural shad, blue, violet, chartreuse. Jig heads 5-15 g according to depth.

Worms 10-12 cm

Roboworm style worms, natural or dark colours. For Texas rig, drop shot or Carolina. Particularly effective late season.

Hooks and jig heads

Jig heads 5-15 g (jig head style). Eyed hooks for Texas rig. Varied range to adapt weight to Lot depth (3-6 m).

Step by step

Rigging and practice

1

Choose lure size

Zander: 8-12 cm generally. In cold water or heavy pressure, go down to 6-8 cm. Perch: 5-8 cm. On the Lot, 8-10 cm shads and 10-12 cm worms give the best results for zander.

2

Select colours

Clear water: natural (blue, green, silver), dark (violet, black). Coloured water: chartreuse, orange, pink. On the Lot, alternate natural and dark according to light. When in doubt, violet and blue work well.

3

Adapt setup to structure

Clean bottom: classic jig head. Weed beds/obstacles: Texas rig (weedless). Vertical fishing: drop shot. Rocky bottom: Carolina rig to avoid snags. On the Lot, Texas and jig head cover most situations.

4

Animate the lure

Slow to moderate retrieve with pauses. Zander likes lures that "drag" near the bottom. Light twitch, free fall descent, small hops. Vary until you find what triggers.

5

Prospect the right spots

Holes, breaks, current margins, rocks. Zander holds near the bottom. Cast upstream of the spot, let descend, retrieve crossing the zone. Repeat on different axes.

At the lodge

Practice this technique with us

Gîte du Martin Pêcheur is an ideal starting point for zander soft lure fishing. Lot holes nearby, rocks and current margins offer varied spots. Hamid can point you to the breaks and zones where zander hold according to the season. The pontoon allows prospecting the hole opposite; a boat opens access to more spots. Perch is often on the same spots: plan 6-10 cm lures to vary targets.

Pitfalls to avoid

Common mistakes

Using lures that are too large

Zander often prefers moderate-sized prey. 12-15 cm shads can put it off. Stay on 8-10 cm priority, go down to 6 cm if needed.

Retrieving too fast

Zander hunts near the bottom. Too fast retrieve passes the lure above its vision zone. Slow down, make pauses, keep contact with the bottom.

Neglecting dark colours

In clear water or low light, violet, black and dark blue often work better than bright colours. Try dark colours before abandoning a spot.

Fishing too high in the water column

Zander is a bottom fish. Keep your lure within 50 cm of the bottom. Use enough weight to maintain contact.

FAQ

Your questions about this technique

What is the best soft lure colour for zander?

On the Lot, natural (blue, green, silver) and dark (violet, black) colours give the best results. In coloured water, chartreuse and orange can revive activity. Vary according to light.

Shad or worm for zander?

Both work. Shad on jig head is versatile for prospecting. Worm on drop shot or Texas excels on zander in position. Bring both and adapt to the spot.

What jig head weight on the Lot?

For 3-6 m depths on the Lot, 8-12 g heads work. In current, go up to 15 g. In shallow water, 5-7 g suffice.

Do soft lures also attract perch?

Yes, perch loves soft lures. Use smaller sizes (5-8 cm) to target it, or keep 8-10 cm shads: you'll catch zander and perch on the same spots.

Do you need a boat for zander soft lures?

No. Fishing from the pontoon and banks is productive. A boat allows prospecting more holes and structure. Hamid can point you to spots accessible on foot from the lodge.
