Zander: king of winter
Understanding winter zander behaviour
In winter, zander do not tolerate mistakes. Too fast an action or too large a lure will be systematically ignored. The key: slow everything down.
The 3 top techniques in winter
- 1Drop-shot: Lure suspended above the bottom, fixed by a weight at the end of the line. Micro-actions (trembles, small twitches) without moving the weight. Accounts for 70% of winter catches.
- 2Vertical: Fish finder + 7–10 cm soft lure lowered vertically into the holes. You locate the fish and present the lure under its nose. Very effective.
- 3Linear soft lure: 7–10 cm shad with heavy weight (10–15 g). Very slow action with long pauses. Retrieve at a crawl, the lure must skim the bottom.

Mistakes to avoid
- 1Too fast action: Winter zander do not chase. Slow everything down, multiply the pauses.
- 2Lure too big: A 12–15 cm shad will be ignored. Favour 7–10 cm.
- 3Ignoring the fish finder: Locating holes and zander shoals doubles your chances.
- 4Fishing too high in the water column: Zander are glued to the bottom. Keep your lure in the last metre.
