Ultra-light perch fishing
Ultra-light perch fishing (UL)
Ultra-light (UL) perch fishing is one of the most accessible and rewarding techniques for predators. It consists of using light equipment (1-7 g rods, 1000-2000 reels, fine line) and micro-lures to catch perch of all sizes. Sensations are multiplied: every take is fully felt, and fights are sporty. This approach suits beginners as well as experienced anglers and is easily practised from the banks.
On the Lot at Aiguillon, perch is omnipresent. It loves weed margins, rocks, moderate current zones and structure edges. Ultra-light equipment allows prospecting these spots with precision, casting 2 to 5 g lures without effort and multiplying takes. From the pontoon of Gîte du Martin Pêcheur, you can access perch-rich zones without heavy equipment. 2 to 4 hour sessions can be very productive, especially morning and late afternoon.
What you need
Ultra-light rod 2.10 to 2.40 m (1-7 g)
Fast action for feeling. Power suited to 2-5 g lures. A versatile UL rod covers most situations on the Lot.
Spinning reel 1000-2000
Light, shallow spool. 8-12 lb mono or 4-6 lb braid. Fine line improves casts and sensitivity.
Micro-lures: spoons and spinners
Spinning spoons 0-2, spinners 2-5 g. Silver, gold, copper colours. Insect and small fish imitations.
Miniature soft lures
Shads 4-6 cm, worms 5-7 cm on 1-3 g jig heads. Natural and bright colours. For bottom work.
Fluorocarbon hooklink 6-10 lb
30-50 cm fluorocarbon for invisibility and abrasion resistance. No need for steel: perch doesn't cut line.
Rigging and practice
Choose the spot according to season
Spring: weed margins, shallow zones. Summer: shaded zones, 2-4 m depth. Autumn: weed beds, rocks. On the Lot, margins opposite the pontoon and rocks are regular spots.
Select the micro-lure
Spinning spoon 0-2 for surface and mid-water prospecting. Shad 4-5 cm on 1-2 g head for bottom. When in doubt, a 2-3 g spoon and 5 cm shad cover most situations.
Cast and animate
Cast along margins, parallel to the bank. Slow to moderate retrieve. Spoon: regular retrieve with pauses. Shad: hop-hop, free fall descent. Vary until you find the right rhythm.
Detect the take and strike
The perch take is often decisive: a clear "toc". Sometimes more subtle. Keep contact. Strike with a sharp wrist movement as soon as you feel the take. Perch has a fragile mouth: avoid overly violent strikes.
Careful release
Perch is fragile. Avoid squeezing it. Unhook gently, quick photo if desired, immediate release. A moistened unhooking mat protects the mucus.

Book your stayCommon mistakes
Using equipment that's too heavy
Ultra-light relies on finesse. A 5-25 g rod and 20/100 line reduce sensations and takes. Stay on 1-7 g and 8-12 lb line max.
Retrieving too fast
Perch often prefers slow animation. Slow down, make pauses. A spoon that "drags" attracts more than fast retrieve.
Neglecting close margins
Perch often hunt less than 2 m from the bank. Cast along the banks, under branches. Don't prospect only in the distance.
Striking too hard
Perch has a fragile mouth. Too violent a strike can tear the hook out. A sharp wrist movement suffices.
Your questions about this technique
What equipment to start ultra-light perch?
A UL rod 2.10-2.40 m (1-7 g), a 1000-2000 reel, 8-12 lb mono or 4-6 lb braid. A few 2-3 g spoons and 5 cm shads on 1-2 g heads. Reasonable budget for complete initiation.
What is the best period for perch on the Lot?
Perch is active from April to November. Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are excellent. In summer, prefer morning and evening. Perch are present all season.
Spoon or soft lure for perch?
Both work. The spinning spoon prospects well on surface and mid-water. The soft lure on jig head excels near the bottom. Bring both and alternate according to spots.
Do you need a boat for UL perch?
No. Fishing from the pontoon and banks is very productive. The Lot offers many spots accessible on foot. UL equipment is perfect for itinerant fishing along the banks.
Does perch bite all day?
Perch can bite at any time, with activity peaks at sunrise and sunset. In summer, avoid midday (12-4pm) if takes become rare.
