Boilie fishing
Boilie Fishing
The boilie is the king of modern carp fishing baits. Born in England in the 1970s, it revolutionised carp fishing by offering a selective, nutritious and highly attractive bait. On the Lot river at Aiguillon, boilie fishing is the most effective technique for targeting large common and mirror carp that inhabit the calm, deep waters.
The varied river bed of the Lot — gravel bars, deep weed beds and sandy plateaus — is perfectly suited to boilie fishing. The carp in this stretch, used to feeding on rich natural substrates, respond remarkably well to quality boilies, particularly meaty recipes in cold weather and fruity flavours from spring to autumn. From our private pontoon, you have direct access to prime fishing spots without needing a vehicle.
What you need
12ft carp rods (3.60 m)
3 to 3.5 lb test curve for casting distance and controlling fights. Semi-parabolic action recommended for the Lot.
Big pit reel with baitrunner
Long-range spool, progressive front drag, minimum 4.5:1 ratio. 300 m capacity of 0.30 mm mono.
Line or braid
0.30 mm mono for versatility, or 0.20 mm braid for long-distance fishing. 25 lb fluorocarbon hooklink.
Hair rig setup
Size 4 to 6 Wide Gape hooks, micro ring, baiting needle, hair stops. The essential basic rig.
Bite alarms and rod pod
Electronic bite alarms with receiver for long sessions. Stable rod pod or banksticks depending on the swim.
Rigging and practice
Choose your boilies
Select boilies of 15 to 20 mm diameter. In warm season (May-September), go for fruity flavours (pineapple, strawberry, scopex). In cold weather, opt for meaty boilies (robin red, liver, squid). Plan 3 to 5 kg for a 48-hour session. On the Lot, 18 mm fruity boilies give the best results in spring.
Tie the hair rig
Thread the boilie onto the baiting needle, transfer it to the hair rig and secure with a stop. The boilie should hang 2-3 mm below the hook bend. Add an 80 to 120 g anti-eject lead depending on the current. On the Lot, use 100 g pear leads to hold the rig in the gentle current.
Find and bait the spot
Sound the bottom with a marker float to find hard areas (gravel, sand) and weed beds. Bait with about a hundred boilies over a 3×3 metre area. Use a throwing stick or bait boat for accuracy. On the Lot from our pontoon, areas 30-50 m from the bank are most productive.
Position the rods
Cast your rigs into the centre of the baited area. Use the line clip to reproduce the same distance. Set the rods on the pod, tighten the line and adjust the alarms. Fan the rods out to cover different areas of the swim.
Manage the session
Re-bait every 4-6 hours with 20-30 boilies. Vary flavours if bites aren't coming. After each capture, rest the swim for 15 minutes before recasting. The best activity windows on the Lot are dusk (7-10pm) and dawn (5-8am).
Practice this technique with us
Our private pontoon is ideally positioned for boilie fishing. The river bed in front of the lodge features a gravel plateau at 40 m from the bank, surrounded by natural depressions of 3 to 5 metres depth. Carp regularly patrol between these spots, making it a strategic baiting location. Hamid, your host, can point you to the most productive areas according to the season. Carp rods are offered for hire.
Book your stayCommon mistakes
Over-baiting from the start
Start with a moderate amount (50-100 boilies). Increase gradually if bites are regular. Too much bait saturates the swim and fish fill up without taking your rig.
Neglecting spot selection
A good spot is worth a thousand boilies. Take time to feel the bottom with a marker lead. On the Lot, gravel-to-silt transitions are the most productive zones.
Not adapting to the current
The Lot has a moderate but real current. Use heavy enough leads (100 g minimum) and regularly check your rigs haven't drifted.
Sticking with the same boilies too long
If no bites in 12 hours, change flavour or size. Lot carp can be selective, especially in summer.
Your questions about this technique
What are the best boilies for the Lot river?
On the Lot at Aiguillon, fruity boilies (scopex, pineapple) of 18 mm work very well from spring to autumn. In winter, prefer meaty boilies (robin red, squid). Recognised brands like Mainline, Nash or CC Moore give excellent results.
How many boilies for a 48-hour session?
Plan 3 to 5 kg of boilies for a 48-hour session with 3 rods. Add 1 kg of backup boilies (different flavour) and some pop-ups to vary presentations.
Is the hair rig difficult to tie?
The basic hair rig is accessible to beginners with a little practice. You need an eyed hook, hair braid, baiting needle and stops. Video tutorials will guide you easily.
Can you fish with boilies at night at the lodge?
Yes, night fishing is allowed on our stretch of the Lot. It's actually one of the best times for boilie fishing: carp are more active and less cautious between sunset and dawn.
Do I need a bait boat?
A bait boat is a plus for accurate long-range baiting, but it's not essential. From our pontoon, a throwing stick is enough to reach the good spots located 30-50 m from the bank.
