Bait: the key to success in carp fishing
Boilies: the king of baits
- 1Meaty boilie (fishmeal): Fishmeal base, ideal in warm water May–October, the most versatile.
- 2Fruity boilie: Fruity aromas (scopex, tutti frutti), effective all year including winter.
- 3Spicy boilie: Robin Red, GLM, powerful attractants, cold water and wary fish.
- 4Pop-up: Floating boilie on hair rig, visibility in silt, essential.
- 5Wafter: Semi-floating, natural presentation, perfect balance on hard bottom.
Natural seeds
- 1Tiger nut: Hard sweet seed, selective, resists small fish, top on rivers.
- 2Sweetcorn: Classic cheap option, visual, effective in spring and summer on all swims.
- 3Hemp: Oily seed that stimulates feeding, excellent in groundbait.
- 4Lupin: Protein-rich and resistant, good in strong current.
- 5Cooked wheat: Economical, mass groundbaiting on lakes, ideal for holding fish on the swim.
Pellets and other baits
- 1Halibut pellet: Oil-rich, releases attractants for a long time, ideal in method feeder.
- 2Expander pellet: Absorbs aromas, softens in water, perfect for method feeder.
- 3Bread: Classic surface fishing bait, effective for stalking.
- 4Earthworms: Universal bait, excellent for wary carp in winter.
- 5Maggots: In groundbait carpet or method feeder, very effective on small venues.
Which bait for which season?
| Season | Water temp | Main bait | Secondary bait | Groundbaiting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | 10–16 °C | Fruity boilie | Sweetcorn | Moderate |
| Summer | 18–24 °C | Tiger nut | Meaty boilie | Generous |
| Autumn | 12–18 °C | Meaty boilie | Halibut pellet | Substantial |
| Winter | 4–10 °C | Small spicy boilie | Earthworm | Minimal |
On rivers, baits that resist the current are essential. Tiger nut and hard boilies are preferable to sweetcorn which comes off easily.
