Bait: the key to success in carp fishing

Bait accounts for 80% of success in carp fishing. Carp are wary fish with a highly developed sense of taste: they distinguish flavours and textures. Adapting your bait to the season and venue is essential. In summer, carp favour protein baits; in winter, spicy aromas and small baits trigger more takes. Each venue has its habits: some respond to fruity boilies, others to natural seeds. The carp angler must test and adapt.

Boilies: the king of baits

Five essential boilie types:
  • 1Meaty boilie (fishmeal): Fishmeal base, ideal in warm water May–October, the most versatile.
  • 2Fruity boilie: Fruity aromas (scopex, tutti frutti), effective all year including winter.
  • 3Spicy boilie: Robin Red, GLM, powerful attractants, cold water and wary fish.
  • 4Pop-up: Floating boilie on hair rig, visibility in silt, essential.
  • 5Wafter: Semi-floating, natural presentation, perfect balance on hard bottom.

Natural seeds

Five essential seeds for carp:
  • 1Tiger nut: Hard sweet seed, selective, resists small fish, top on rivers.
  • 2Sweetcorn: Classic cheap option, visual, effective in spring and summer on all swims.
  • 3Hemp: Oily seed that stimulates feeding, excellent in groundbait.
  • 4Lupin: Protein-rich and resistant, good in strong current.
  • 5Cooked wheat: Economical, mass groundbaiting on lakes, ideal for holding fish on the swim.

Pellets and other baits

Five complementary baits:
  • 1Halibut pellet: Oil-rich, releases attractants for a long time, ideal in method feeder.
  • 2Expander pellet: Absorbs aromas, softens in water, perfect for method feeder.
  • 3Bread: Classic surface fishing bait, effective for stalking.
  • 4Earthworms: Universal bait, excellent for wary carp in winter.
  • 5Maggots: In groundbait carpet or method feeder, very effective on small venues.

Which bait for which season?

Autumn12–18 °CMeaty boilieHalibut pelletSubstantial

On rivers, baits that resist the current are essential. Tiger nut and hard boilies are preferable to sweetcorn which comes off easily.

Groundbaiting strategies

Mass groundbaiting on lakes in summer attracts and holds carp on the swim. On rivers and in winter, surgical groundbaiting (small quantities, targeted) is more effective. Combine seeds, boilies and pellets to create an attractive carpet. The catapult allows short-range groundbaiting, the spod for long range, the bait boat for maximum precision. Adapt the quantity to session length: 2 to 5 kg of boilies for a 48 h session.

The best baits on the Lot at Aiguillon

Meaty boilie and tiger nut work very well on the Lot. The moderate current allows catapult groundbaiting. Hamid recommends his favourite rigs and baits. Aiguillon market offers fresh seeds to complete your tackle.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions on this topic.

What is the best universal bait for carp?

Meaty boilie (fishmeal) is the most versatile. It works on most venues from May to October. As a complement, tiger nut and sweetcorn cover most situations.

Can you use bread for carp?

Yes, bread is effective for surface fishing and stalking. It attracts carp feeding on the surface. Avoid large quantities so as not to saturate the swim.

Should you prebait the day before?

Ideally yes. Groundbaiting 24 to 48 h before the session creates a confidence zone and gets carp used to the swim. On large lakes, prebaiting multiplies your chances.

How many kg of boilies for a session?

2 to 5 kg depending on duration. A 24 h session: 2 kg. A 48–72 h session: 4–5 kg. Adapt according to venue density and fishing pressure.

How to prepare tiger nut?

Soak 24 h then cook 30 minutes. The seed should be tender but not burst. Correct preparation avoids digestive problems for the carp.
