The bivouac: your base camp by the water

Carp fishing is unique: you live by the water for several days. The bivouac is not just a shelter, it is your base camp, your refuge between takes, your place to rest for nights of watching. Bivouac comfort directly influences session quality. Sleeping well means being more focused at crucial times: dawn and dusk, when carp feed. An exhausted carp angler misses takes, makes mistakes. A rested carp angler stays alert, reacts quickly, manages fights better. Investing in a good bivouac is investing in your catches.

Choosing your bivvy

The bivvy is the centrepiece of the camp. Essential criteria: waterproofing (10,000 mm hydrostatic head minimum), size (1 or 2 person depending on your practice), weight (for transport), and speed of pitching. A good bivvy lasts 10 years and more. Budget ranges from €150 to €400 depending on quality: a mid-range bivvy at €250 is enough for most sessions. The optional overwrap is useful in winter for thermal insulation. Choose recognised brands (Fox, Nash, JRC) for construction guarantee and available spare parts.

Sleeping

Four essential items for comfortable sleeping:
  • 1Bedchair: 6 ft padded camp bed, essential for long sessions. Budget €100–250. It changes everything for comfort.
  • 2Sleeping bag: 3–4 season, comfort temperature 0 °C minimum for spring and autumn nights. Carp bite at night, you need to be rested.
  • 3Thermal blanket: In addition to the sleeping bag for cold nights. Light and compact.
  • 4Inflatable pillow: Detail that makes all the difference for sleep quality. Cheap, easy to carry.

Eating during the session

Five items for food self-sufficiency:
  • 1Gas stove: Compact, 1 burner enough for coffee, tea and quick meals. Essential.
  • 2Cooking set and utensils: Complete lightweight kit in aluminium or stainless steel. Plate, cutlery, pan.
  • 3Water: 3–4 litres per day per person. Plan generously, dehydration tires you out.
  • 4Food: Dehydrated meals, tins, sandwiches, fruit. Do not neglect food, it affects your energy.
  • 5Cool box: For fresh produce, bait and cold drinks. A welcome luxury.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions on this topic.

What budget for a complete bivouac?

Count €500 to €800 for a quality bivvy, bedchair and sleeping bag. It is a lasting investment: tackle lasts 10 years and more.

Can you bivouac anywhere by the water?

No. Check local regulations and bank ownership. Some venues allow bivouac, others do not. Check with the AAPPMA.

How to manage rain in bivouac?

Waterproof bivvy (10,000 mm), groundsheet, store tackle under shelter. A quality bivvy holds up well to wind and rain.

Is bivouac essential?

No, you can fish for the day. But long sessions (48–72 h) are more productive: carp get used to the swim and groundbaiting takes effect.

What alternative to bivouac?

A gîte by the water like Gîte du Martin Pêcheur: comfort of a real home, direct access to the Lot, alarms 50 m from the sofa.
